Tomato Bath

This is typical Darshini style or a cafe style rice cooked often in Bangalore/ Karnataka. A lip smacking rice which can be cooked in a traditional cooker or the instant pot.


Serves for 2 ppl
Category - Lunch / Dinner


Rice - 1 cup (wash and soak for about 1 hour)
Tomato - 3 medium (coarsely chopped 1 and 2 others will go into the blender)
Red Chillies - 8 Nos. (This will yield medium spicy)
Marathi Mogu - 1 No.
Cinnamon - 1 inch
Elachi - 1 No. (Optional)
Garlic - 1 pod
Ginger - 1/2 inch
Fresh coconut - 1 small cup scrapped
Jaggery - 1 v.small piece
Jeera - 1tsp
Black pepper - 1No.
Clove - 2 Nos.
Coriander seeds - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil - 4tbsp
Water - 2 cups

In the blender add all the above ingredients except for chopped tomatoes, rice and oil..... Grind the entire mixture to a smooth paste. Don't add water. Keep aside.

In a pressure cooker add in the oil and chopped tomatoes, fry till tomatoes become smashy then add in the ground mixture and fry nicely till oil separates. Now add in the soaked rice fry for a minute.

To this add water bring it to boil and close the lid, wait for 3 whistles then put it off.

Tomato bath is ready to serve. You can garnish it with Slices of tomato and coriander. This can also be accompanied with coconut chutney/raita.




Instant Pot -Use sauté mode at the beginning and later -  Manual 4 minutes HP, NPR.
